Coincidences between my life
and the life of Gaston Duchamp
- He died in the year my brother was born - 1963.
- His brother, Marcel, and sister, Suzanne, both died in the year I was born - 1968.
- We both chose the same pseudonym to honour the same poet, Francois Villon.
- Our first names contain the same vowels "a" and "o". Compare Gaston and Jacco.
- He excelled in cubism, I write cubes for Excel. The essence of cubism is that instead of viewing subjects from a single, fixed angle, the artist breaks them up into a multiplicity of facets, so that several different aspects/faces of the subject can be seen simultaneously. His speciality was Analytical Cubism. My day job is to market a computer software package. This package is a database program that stores numbers in multidimensional cubes and presents the information in a spreadsheet from where multiple facets (slices) of the information can be viewed. The technology applied is called Online Analytical Processing.
- The book I located about his work is published by the Museum of Art in Philadelphia, which also boasts one of the largest collections of his work. In June 2002 I visited Philadelphia to learn about multidimensional cubes.
- Duchamp, Francois Villon and most of the Avant Garde artists lived in Paris. I learnt about multidimensional cubes from a company, which name contains the word paris.

| The Vitruvian Man |
|
The 64 hexagrams of
the I Ching14 |
- The company's logo is an adaptation of Leonardo da Vinci's sketch, the "Vitruvian man". "Leonardo sees mankind as the representative of a principle of creation whose rules are ultimately dictated by mathematics. The Vitruvian Man serves Leonardo as exemplary evidence of a genuine unity of mathematics and nature."13 The mathematical unity I perceive in nature reaches beyond the physical; it includes the metaphysical. The 64 (26 or 82) squares that describe the ratios of the physical human form is mirrored by the 64 hexagrams described by the I Ching14, which encompasses the totality of the human experience. The I Ching matrix also bears a striking resemblance to a computer spreadsheet and a chess board12.
- We both experience(d) isolation, modesty and obscurity.
- The first term used to describe the style in which he worked was "bizarre cubiques". Some people might call my philosophy of life "bizarre".
- He received the Carnegie Prize in Pittsburgh. I am in contact with the International Society for Bipolar Disorders based in Pittsburgh.
- His drypoint technique remains to me the most striking synchronicity between our lives. The parallel lines crossing at (near) 90o angles bear a strong resemblance to my interpretation of the symbol with which I simultaneously honour:
|
- mathematics and music as the most universal of languages,
- my faith in the following equation: God = Creation (ll and = superimposed),
- with which I imply that everything is sacred,
- that good and evil is one (Christian and Satanic crosses superimposed),
- hence my interpretation of the Biblical Book of Revelations that the Christ and Antichrist is one.
|
- He based his drypoint technique on the Golden Section; I relate my philosophy to the Golden Section of the pentagram and mysticism
in mathematics. The structure of the violin family is partly based on the Golden Section.15
- The Golden Ratio, derived from the Golden Section (1.61803398874...)
is called Phi, which are also the first 3 letters
and the 9th through 11th letters of the word Philadelphia,
the city I visited.
- More Phi in my life:
- I am the manager of a music group called Phoenix,
pronounced Phinix. Read
more about the Phoenix
myth and
Phoenix Pantheism (the
philosophy I relate to most).
- Another one that I noticed only recently (is it not amazing
how one can miss seeing the most obvious things for so long!),
is that the surnames of both my real name, Viljoen,
and my pseudonym, Villon,
start with 3 letters that sounds like "phil".
It is interesting that in Numerology the
actual pronounciation of a name/word is what determines
its specific energy, not the way it is spellt. So strictly
speaking, because "V" in "Viljoen" is pronounced like
the English "F" or "Ph" and "V" in "Villon" like the
English "V", they have ever so slightly different energies.
"Phil-" is a prefix meaning "love for". "-joen" in "Viljoen"
is pronounced like "June" by non-Afrikaans speakers.
June is the 6th
month. "-on" in "Villon" is pronounced with a silent
"n" , like "o" in the word "orbit". "Villon" is
correctly pronounced "viio" because the "ll"
is pronounced like "i" in "intelect". "O"
is the 15th letter, represented by the number
6 in Numerology. "Viljoen"
and "Villon" therefore both mean "lover of 6"
The most important aspect of this number is "harmony".
I interpret my surnames as meaning: "lover of harmony,
lover of music". Also read about the symbolism
of the number 666 in my life.
- An adjective used instead of the word "symphony" in front
of the word "orchestra" could also be "philharmonic" (literally:
love for music).
- The surname of my dear South African friend who took care
of my dirty laundry and visited me very often during
my hospitalization
in Hamburg in 1993, is "Fiedler" and
her cat was called "Filo". "Fiedler" reminds
me of the English word for "fiddler",
a gypsy violinist, as in the film "Fiddler on
the roof". The Afrikaans word for "violin" is "viool".
If one turns the order of the last letters of this word
around, one gets to a word that sounds like "Filo".
My instrument, the 'Cello, or as it is called, the Violoncello,
is of course part of the violin family. I wrestled with
death (contemplated
suicide) on the roof of the Morningside
Clinic in 1991. I was the fiddler/cellist on the roof.
The Gypsy/Bohemian culture
is one that I feel (interesting
one?) most attracted to.
- The other person who cared most for me before and during my
1993 illness and listened patiently to all my "madness",
a Hungarian by the name of Agnes (Agnes means "pure"), later
called her first child "Villö"
without knowing that I chose "Villon"
as pseudonym during the same time she chose her son's name. This
really is the most beautiful synchronicity of all synchronicities
in my life. On a typewriter without an "ö" key, one
would type this name "Villoe". "Villon" and "Villoe" both reduce
numerologically to the same number: 493365.
- The two pictures that my parents bought to express their
"love for" their sons' philharmonic
activities:

When my brother was in the 11th grade he was a soloist in Vivaldi's concerto
for 4 violins. They performed the concerto so often that we eventually called
this group of friends in Afrikaans: "die vier vioole
van Vivaldi". The cellist in the other picture
was dedicated to me. It was only many years later after I co-founded the Phoenix
Ensemble with a flautist, that I recognized the prophetic meaning of this picture.
- Some of my most prominent Archetypes are
the Visionary, Virgin and Victim.
- My basic philosophy is that life is a motion
picture, a film
in which we are all actors.
- Finally, I'm a Philosopher
(lover of wisdom) writing about the "Fine"/End
of Time.
Other synchronicities I experienced
during my second visit to the USA
- I drove past the former house of James A. Michener, author of The Covenant, one of the two books that showed me the inhumanity of Apartheid in South Africa.

The Bible in Tile16 |
- I visited the house of Henry Chapman Mercer, founder of the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works. Mercer was one of the most important artists in the Arts and Crafts movement. The basic shape of a tile is a square and the most basic arrangement of tiles on a flat surface produces the same pattern created by parallel lines crossing at 90o.
- Bucks County, PA is the area I visited. "Buck" is the nickname I call one of my longest standing friends.
|
- Twice on the same day I visited Newtown in Bucks County, PA. Newtown is the location where the recent film Signs with Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix in the leading roles was filmed. The main themes addressed in this film are crop circles17, synchronicity and the end of the world through an invasion of aliens. The alien attack is not successful because they are highly allergic to water. Water is the symbol of the New Age of Aquarius.
- I visited the location where George Washington crossed the Delaware, an event that marked the beginning of the Revolution. We find ourselves currently in history at the dawn of a spiritual evolution, the New Age.
- I visited Quakertown. I admire the Quaker movement for its progressive spirituality, commitment to pacifism and the level of freedom of speech within the movement. In 1996 I visited a psychic in Pretoria, who after 2 hours of aroma therapy told me that she could "see" two of my previous lives. In the one I was a priest in Austria and in the other I was a Quaker headman. Though it is not important for me anymore to know who I was in previous lives or even whether reincarnation is a reality, the synchronicity is striking.
- I visited Ground Zero in New York on the June 21st, 2002, exactly one year after the solar eclipse18 over Southern Africa.
- On the same day I visited the Carnegie Hall where Pablo Casals performed exactly 40 years before to the day. I admire Casals' dream of world peace.
- I walked through Central Park where I stood on the word "Imagine", a tribute to John Lennon. I try to imagine what a world filled with love and peace would be like and I try to create this in my own life.
- I visited the street where the Hippie movement started. One of the
main themes of the movement was the coming of the Age of Aquarius during
which Peace and Love will prevail. I equate the Age of Aquarius with
the Thousand Years of Peace spoken of in the Book of Revelation.
Though I will admit that the visit to Quakertown was intentional, the others were offered to me or happened by "chance" and the synchronistic significance of most of them only became clear to me some time afterwards. Even to this very day new insights come to me.
[14] The I Ching, or Book of Changes, is an Eastern Oracle as old as the Bible itself containing the whole of human experience. Used for divination, it is a method of exploring the unconscious; through the symbolism of its hexagrams we are guided towards the solution of difficult problems and life situations. It can also be read as a book of wisdom revealing the laws of life to which we must all attune ourselves if we are to live in peace and harmony.

[18] The symbolism I attach to solar eclipses will be discussed in a future article.
