There is an unpleasant quatrain, which may describe the Cruise missile agreement at this time:

The London Premier, through American power will burden the island of Scotland with a cold thing. "Polar." Roi Reb will suffer so dreadful an antichrist and will bring them all into trouble.
The deployment of the Cruise missiles is certainly not limited to Greenham Common. There are bases deployed in Scotland and all over the country for both Cruise and Pershing II missiles. One almost feels that the last missiles ever to be fired would be those on Greenham Common. It is a political diversion from basic facts: brilliant propaganda. But to be fair to Nostradamus, he may have been thinking of Polaris, "the cold thing" installed by Harold Macmillan. One fact that troubles me greatly is the number of people who have contacted me to say that they believe "Roy Reb" is some form of anagram for President Reagan. I cannot see this in Nostradamus' vocabulary, but, stranger things than this have happened so I can but leave an open but sceptical mind upon this point. He was, after all, an actor in Western movies. But the missiles are also deployed in many other places over Britain. I make no political comment. I just find it so extraordinary that Nostradamus could even envisage these "rockets of destruction in the sky."
Nostradamus certainly sees a strong link between the ending of the papacy and religious feeling in the world as he understood it. Apart from the "liberal political" Christianity of South America this does appear to be the situation at the present.

From beyond the Black Sea and Great Tartary there will be a king who will come to see France. He will pass through Alanica and America and leave his bloody rod in Byzantium.
Cryptic as always, this quatrain is certain that the man will come from beyond Tartary, Russia. The Alanians, in the division of Tartary, which roughly covered the whole of Central Asia, were situated to the north of the Caucasus and the Armenians to the south. Nostradamus presumably sees the "king," or conqueror, passing through Persia down to the Balkans. Beyond Tartary, there remains only Asia. A similar mention of a man with "a bloody rod" connected with France occurs in 11.29. Perhaps the rod is a weapon of some sort rather than the actual wielding of power? This leads to the unambivalent crescendo of the following.
Tant attendu ne reviendra jamais

Long awaited he will never return in Europe, but he shall appear in Asia. One of the league issued from the great Hermes, he will grow above all other powers in the Orient.
This could be another reference to Perse or the antichrist himself. In terms of the Hermetic literature Hermes stands for Jupiter and Mercury, which generally means Islam. The two other antichrists were European, Napoleon and Hitler. But there is no question but that this third antichrist will definitely arise in Asia. This theory seems extraordinary but one cannot at least accuse Nostradamus of inconsistency. A possible sign of the Third Coming is probably already around us in the fates of the Middle East, Afghanistan, Kurdistan, Ethiopia, Chad, and of Lebanon.

When occurs the battle of the great light horse it will be claimed that the great crescent is destroyed. To kill by night, in the mountains dressed in shepherd's clothing, red gulfs in the deep ditch.
The crescent again confuses the reader because it is essentially a Moslem emblem. A possible dating for the beginning of the war is given in astrological terms in the following complex quatrain.

When a scythe joined with a pond in Sagittarius is at its highest ascendant. Plague, famine, death from military hands. The century approaches its renewal.
I am inclined to interpret the word "scythe" as containing two meanings: the obvious astrological one of Saturn, but also the metaphorical one of the Russian system, as seen in the hammer and sickle. The pond stands for Aquarius. Therefore, if Nostradamus is to be believed, when Saturn is in conjunction with Sagittarius in the ascendant, we should expect a great war with the usual concomitants of disease and famine. However, the Prophet is not entirely correct in this forecast. Aquarius can never be in conjunction with Sagittarius. Saturn "exalted" in the sign of Aquarius only occurs in the signs of Cancer (June/July), Pisces (October/November) or Scorpio (February/March). Saturn moves into a Water sign every seven years. Perhaps the scythe is an obscure prediction of the Russian sickle, Marxism? Another more specific prediction gives the date of the war as 1995.

At the head of Aries, Jupiter and Saturn: eternal God what changes? Then the bad times return after a long century: what turmoil in France and Italy?
As I mentioned, the last conjunction between Jupiter, Saturn and Aries occurred on December 13, 1702, and the next one is predicted for September 2, 1995. But this brings back echoes of the old dilemma of the millennium, and as I have already stated, Nostradamus seems unclear as to the dates of the war-from the end of 1986 to 1999 - a span of thirteen years.
A series of earthquakes, occurring more frequently than in the past, shall also be another indication of what is to come. There will be one dreadful one on May 14 - we are not given the year, but it is reasonable to assume it will be before 1986.

When the sun is in twenty degrees of Taurus there will be an earthquake. The great city [theatre] full of people, will be shattered. Darkness and trouble in the air, on sky and land,when the infidel ignores God and the saints.
Many readers interpret this quatrain as referring to the San Andreas Fault, in California, where an- other shifting of the earth's crust is long overdue. "Sol vingt de Taurus" means quite simply twenty days after the sun moves into the zodiac sign of Taurus, which would be May 10. The reference to the times being no longer truly Christian probably helps to place the quatrain in this century.
Experts on the world's internal turmoil and shifts are trying to establish whether scattered earth- quakes which have killed more than 6000 in 1983 alone are in any way related as a large convulsive pattern. None of the experts can really agree but the debate has certainly thrown up more torment for those living in California. Those scientists who link earthquakes with the motions of the moon say that a few years "on either side" of 1987 "at times near full or new moon and near sunrise or sunset, one might be more likely than otherwise to observe one or more larger earthquakes in California." Cheerful reading. How could Nostradamus possibly have guessed? The new land of America was still almost an unknown quantity, but there it is, in black and white. One seismologist told me that the shocks from a really severe quake in California would definitely be felt as far away as New York.
What I personally call Nostradamus' "millennium dating", I feel is more superstition than knowledge, despite Mrs. Dixon's convictions to the contrary.

In the year 1999 and seven months from the sky will come the Great King of Terror. He will bring back the Great King of the Mongols. Both before and after this, war reigns unrestrained.
I think the last line is the most important here. Whether the Asian King of the Mongols is to appear as late as 1999, war will have been widespread for some years. Perse, Alus, Mabus, or all three?
