"Even after the turn of the century there seems little hope for the human race - such of it that survives.

Apes grand troche humaine plus grand s'appreste,
Le grand moteur des Siecles renouvelle.
Pluie, sang, laict, famine fer et peste,
Au feu ciel veu courant longue estincelle.
II.46

After great misery for mankind an even greater approaches when the great engine of the Centuries is renewed. It will rain blood, milk, famine, war and disease. In the sky will be seen a fire, dragging a tail of sparks.

As I have constantly reiterated in the chapter on the papacy in particular, comets were of immense value in helping date events, particularly those in the future, and to confirm their solemnity. So it does seem possible that line 4 of the last quatrain refers as always to Halley's Comet of 1986. How- ever, the raining of blood and milk is very ominous. After Hiroshima great black blobs of rain fell for days on the contaminated cities. And what is this appalling misery mankind experiences even before the great engine of the centuries is renewed? A very disturbing quatrain.

The influence, if not the man himself-the third antichrist-is always presumed by Nostradamus to have been behind the assassination of the two Ken- nedy brothers, John F. Kennedy and Robert. He also implies very clearly that Edward Kennedy will meet the same fate, but that his position will never be that of power attained by his brothers.

L'AntiChrist trois bien tost annichilez
Vingt et sept ans durera sa guerre.
Les heretiques mortz, captifs, exhilez.
Sang, corps humain, tau rougi gresler terre.
VIII.77

Antichrist will very soon annihilate the three, his war having lasted some twenty-seven years. The unbelievers are dead, captive, exiled; blood, human bodies, a trail of red water spattering the earth.

There is an intriguing "double" meaning in the first line of the quatrain. Three separate antichrists are definitely described in Nostradamus' epistle to the Prophecies. But equally, it is the third antichrist who annihilates the "three." It is difficult to find any other group of three in this century, after Hitler, in power and known worldwide, other than the Kennedy brothers, two of whom have already been assassinated who fit this description. Tragic although it may appear, it does seem that Edward Kennedy, despite his "low profile" since the scandal of Chappaquiddick, is a psychological possibility. Whether this war of twenty-seven years should be related to those, which have dragged on for so long in the Middle East and Africa, yet alone Vietnam, can only be a matter of conjecture. Equally, maybe it will take approximately twenty-seven years be- fore the world will become comparatively safe after a nuclear holocaust. There is a definite emphasis toward Africa-a new development.

Le Monde proche du dernier periode,
Saturne encor lard sera de retour:
Translat emPire devers nation Brodde .
III. 92

The world is nearing its final period. Saturn will again be late on his return. The empire will shift toward a black [Brodde] nation .

"Brodde" in Ancien Provençal meant black or dark brown: does this quatrain deal with the future of the African nations, now so involved politically with both East and West? It also contains the lesser meaning of decadent: Possibly the use of the word empire could refer to the infamous reigns of either Idi Amin of Uganda or that of the Emperor Ange Patasse Bokassa, whose excesses during his coronation surpassed even those of Napoleon. There is always a faint chance that Zimbabwe may be referred to.

The general picture portrayed by Nostradamus is that initially two great powers will ally against a third, but this friendship shall sadly be of short duration. Although at the moment it is geopolitically almost incredible that the Allies will be the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R., the constant references to an Eastern antichrist make it more feasible.

Quant cewe du polle artiq unis ensemble,
En Orient grand effrayeur et trainte:
Esleu nouveau, soustenu le grand tremble
Rhodes, Bisance, de sang Barbare taincte.
VI.21

When the people of the northern pole are united together, in the East will be great fear and dread. A new leader is elected, supported fry a great one who trembles. Rhodes, Byzantium will be stained with barbarian blood.

But we should not fear too much. The theme is continued more strongly and a victor declared.

La regne a deux laisse bien peu tiendront
Trois ans sept mois passes feront la guerre.
Les deux vestales contre eux rebelleront,
Victor puis nay en Amorique terre.
IV. 95

The rule left to two, they shall hold it a very short time. After three years and seven months have passed they will [have to] go to war. Two vassals will rebel against them: the victor then born on American soil.

If this continues the reference to the Allies in the former quatrain, world peace will only last for three years and seven months after which they are forced to take some form of warlike stance; "feront." Who the vassal countries are is impossible to say. But victory finally lies in the West, with America.

It is at this point that the world must take note. The theme of the two great Allies is again repeated, but again the "man of blood" is introduced.

Un jour seront demi.5 les deux grands maistres,
Leur grand pouvoir se verra augmente.
La terre neuf sera en ses hauts estres
Au sanguinaire le nombre racompte.
II.89

One day the two great leaders shall become friends. Their great power shall be seen to grow. The new land will be at the height of its power: to the man of blood the number is reported.

The key to this quatrain lies in the word "demis" in line one. It is almost certainly a misprint for d'amis, which I have used. To understand demis in its usual sense of hatred, would make nonsense of the rest. Powers of great leaders cannot be in- creased if they are halved. Line three seems to link the two powers with America again. The problem for the modern reader is this: when does Nostradamus' "man of blood" consider himself and his rival to be at the height of their powers and a danger to both himself and his beliefs?

The present building up of Cruise missiles, Pershing IIs, etc., does not seem to bode well for the West. Nostradamus implies that our arms build up is so great, so committed perhaps, that the West will force the East into a warlike position. This could well be the case.

L'horrible guerre qu'en l'occident s'apreste
L'an ensuivant viendra La pestilence,
Si fort horrible, que jeune, vieux ne beste,
Sang, feu, Mercure, Mars, Jupiter en France.
IX. 55

The dreadful war is being prepared in the West, the following year will be followed by the pestilence: so very horrible that young, nor old nor animal [will survive] blood, fire, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter in France.

I have a horrid fear that the pestilence, covering so many victims will again be nuclear fallout.

One cannot but feel that Nostradamus' vision of the twentieth century was one of war, brutality, famine and disaster. Equally, as must be so often repeated, prophets are of essence men of doom and gloom, and one cannot expect the rhapsodies of a self-deluded world saviour from such a character. This is an extremely unsettling chapter and is intended to be read as such. Perhaps even now some men of power, in whose hands lies the fate of the world, might just pause for a short while and consider where their present inexorable policies are leading us.
